Fasting insulin test in Estonia: price, where to take it, interpretation
Dr Sergey Saadi
Fasting insulin is one of the best early markers of metabolic risk, yet standard GP check-ups almost always leave it out. It costs 8–15 €, preparation is simple, but interpretation needs the right doctor.
Where to take it in Estonia
- SYNLAB Estonia – 8–12 €, no referral needed
- Medicum lab – 10–15 €
- GP under the health insurance fund – free with medical justification
How to prepare
- Fasting 10–12 hours (water is fine)
- No alcohol 48 hours before
- No intense exercise 24 hours before
- Blood draw in the morning between 7 and 10
- Bring your medication list – metformin, statins, hormones matter
Interpretation
Lab reference (typically 2–24 mU/L) is statistical, not metabolically optimal. Clinically:
- < 6 mU/L – optimal
- 6–10 mU/L – borderline
- 10–15 mU/L – early insulin resistance (Crofts et al., 2016)
- > 15 mU/L – clinically significant resistance
Why HOMA-IR beats insulin alone
HOMA-IR combines fasting insulin and glucose (Matthews et al., 1985). If you order insulin, add glucose – the calculation is free and gives a clearer picture.
